People Purpose Planning

People Purpose Planning aims to support arts, cultural and third sector organisations to achieve high performance by focusing on their people, their purpose and the effectiveness of their planning processes.


A clear and strong sense of shared purpose is key to the success of any organisation led by passionate people; it is the glue that binds us together to achieve a common goal.

In the third sector I have heard this described as a response to a strong feeling of dissatisfaction with inequalities and prejudice in society; this becomes a powerful driver for bringing people together to develop and deliver new solutions to challenging social issues.

In the arts the bottom line is the unique power of art to shape society by reflecting the world around us, helping us better understand the past and imagine and create the future.

But how often does this clarity – this shared sense of purpose, the reason we get out of bed in the morning, our driving force - get lost in the day to day routine of work?

How much do we assume – particularly in leadership positions – that ‘everyone gets it’, that 'everyone believes it’ and therefore we can take it for granted and 'get on with business’?

When was the last time that you revisited the vision and mission of your organisation with your team and board of directors?

I have led activity with a number of organisations, including Helix Arts, to revisit, refine, and in some cases rewrite vision and mission and then to go further, to develop organisational objectives and strategies, and ultimately business plans, that align the activity of the organisation under a clear and shared sense of purpose in order to better harness the passion of all the people involved in order to achieve the organisational goal.
